What do I do if there is oxidation or rusting on my SOG?

If oxidation or rusting is present, clean and buff the affected area with a soft chamois and apply a coat of oil to the entire tool surface. For trouble spots utilize an anti-oxidation product (such as Miracle Cloth) after cleaning and then apply a protective product (such as Sentry’s Marine Tuf-Cloth) to prevent further oxidation and repel foreign debris. You may also want to try a light steel wool pad (000 grit) to buff off the rust, and then re-apply the anti-rusting agent.

Remember: rust and corrosion occur most often due to the absence of proper maintenance, so the best defense against oxidation or rusting is to keep your tool clean and well-oiled.

How do I get my knife sharpened?

You may send your knife in to us, with a $9.00 money order for return shipping, and we will provide general maintenance, including sharpening, and send it back to you as soon as possible.

What do I do if I take my knife/tool apart and can’t put it back together?

Taking your knife or multi-tool apart voids the warranty on the item. Should this occur, you may send it to us and we can reassemble it for a $20.00 fee.

What constitutes “mis-use” or “abuse” of my knife or tool?

Non-recommended activities include, but are not limited to: Disassembling your knife/tool; Using your knife as a screwdriver, pry bar, or chisel; Throwing your knife (unless the knife is designed to be thrown); Improper storage or a knife/tool; Not following SOG’s general maintenance guidelines.

How should I care for my SOG multi-tool?

Regularly clean and fully dry your multi-tool, especially after use. When necessary, oil the pivot points with a light oil. Be sure to clean the blade and handle set after each use. A mild solution of soap and water should remove any dirt and debis that have accumulated during use (avoid harsh detergents such as laundry or dish soap, and chlorine products). It is best not to immerse your folding tool in water. To remove any debris from inside the handle you can use a toothpick for any visible lint or dirt, or a Q-Tip for smaller amounts of dirt and debris. Also, a can of compressed air is useful for completely clearing out any embedded dirt or lint. (Ensure that you follow all recommended cautionary guidelines that the product provides, as some compressed air canisters use an accelerant which might damage your tool’s finish.) If extremely dirty or after exposure to salt water, rinse the tool in fresh water, or with a mild solution of diluted soap and water, and completely dry the tool with a soft cotton cloth. Apply a light coat of water-displacing oil (such as WD-40 or 3-In-1) or other desiccant (a drying agent), and then wipe down and lightly lubricate the tool’s surface and pivot points. This will not only remove any dirt and debris which might inhibit the tool’s functioning, but will also help prevent oxidation and rusting on the surface steel. (This is particularly important if you live in humid or marine environments.) Do not store the tool inside a pouch for long periods, as moisture will remain trapped in the fabric, and tanning oils in leather sheaths might accelerate oxidation and rusting.

What are the non-recommended uses for my SOG multi-tool?

Multi-purpose tools are not intended to replace full-sized tools, such as full-scale screwdrivers, wire cutters, clamps, etc. Instead, multi-tools offer a pocket-portable kit for use on light to moderately heavy-duty applications. Use the proper tools for the proper applications.

Where can I get new component tools or blades?

We sell replacement components on our website and by phone through our Retail Department. All of our components are fully interchangeable (unlike most of our competitors), and can be replaced by anyone with basic mechanical skills. (Replacing or installing new components will not interfere with your warranty coverage.)

Please ensure that you only purchase SOG multi-tool components, because any damage caused to your tool by the use of non-SOG components will not be covered under your warranty.

What about my plier head?

If your pliers break, you may either send your tool to our warranty department for repair, free of charge, or you may purchase a replacement plier head for $10.00 and install it yourself. Installation of a new plier head will not be considered “disassembly” and will not void your warranty. (Removal or alteration of the rivets and gears of your plier head is considered “disassembly” and will void your warranty coverage.) If you need replacement bolt sets for your tool please call our warranty department for information.

How do I custom configure my multi-tool components?

SOG multi-tool components can be easily swapped out without voiding your warranty using basic mechanical knowledge. To start, remove the hex nut with a 5/16 hex wrench, and remove the spacer or component to be replaced. Insert new component in desired position, keeping in mind that some components can only be placed in certain positions within the multi-tool. Realign the components with the holes and push the hex nut all the way through. On the powerlock, make sure the component lock groove is in the same position as the other components. You might need to use a nail (or similar item) to help guide the pin through. Next, re-bolt the hex nut and adjust for the proper operating tension (a small drop of blue LocTite on the threads is HIGHLY recommended to prevent the bolt from falling out). If properly installed, the multi-tool should close completely, and components should easily come out yet stay in place when closed.

Component arrangement tips

When customizing your configuration, keep in mind that there are a limited number of "slots" for multi-tool components, and certain components take up more than one slot. Also note the size of each component when selecting your arrangement- Large components MUST go on the outside edges (one per side) and large and medium components work best when seperated by a small component. Scissors and Wirecutters MUST be positioned on the far left side of any configuration, and the Phillips head screwdriver must have small components on either side. Below you'll find a chart of total slots per multi-tool, as well as a chart of component sizes.

Practicing proper care for your knife will extend the life of your SOG as well as increase its durability and reliability. Keep your knife clean. Be sure to clean the blade and handle after each use – however, do not soak your knife in water, particularly if you have a knife with leather handles. A mild solution of soap and water should remove any dirt and debris that may have accumulated during use (avoid harsh detergents such as laundry or dish soap, and chlorine products).

Keep your knife dry. After cleaning or after exposure to moisture be sure to completely dry your knife blade and handle, taking special care with any sensitive handle materials, like leather. Use a soft cotton cloth or chamois and a small amount of moisture-displacing oil (such as WD-40 or 3-in-1), on the blade only, to prevent water spots and oxidation from forming.

Keep your knife oiled. Fingerprints and weather are the primary causes of rusting or corrosion on a knife blade. To keep your knife looking its best we recommend that you give your blade a light coat of oil after each cleaning, and prior to long term storage (you may need to re-apply oil more frequently if you live in humid or marine environments). If you knife is kept in storage it is recommended to use a desiccant to remove moisture in the air. Please note that even stainless steel will rust without proper maintenance.

Keep your knife sharp. A sharp knife is safer and easier to use than a dull one. If you are new to sharpening blades we recommend that you invest in a fixed-angle sharpening kit, so that you ensure a consistent grind from tip to base – we also recommend that you practice your sharpening skills on your kitchen cutlery first, before working on your SOG knife. SOG also offers factory sharpening services for a minimal $9.00 charge, and would be happy to assist you with any sharpening needs you may have. Fixed blade knives are useful in a variety of applications and circumstances, and you will find that your SOG knife can become and priceless piece of your gear. While uses and applications for each knife may vary, a good rule of thumb is not to use a knife to pry.

How should I store my knife?

While not in use, oil your blade and store it in a cardboard scabbard/sheath. Do not store your knife in the Kydex/nylon/leather carrying sheath that came with the knife as moisture can become trapped inside the sheath and accelerate oxidation or rusting. A cardboard scabbard will wick moisture away from the blade’s surface and prevent dust and debris from accumulating. Keep your knife stored in a controlled room-temperature environment, preferably with low moisture or humidity. Periodically re-oil the blade while it is in storage, approximately two or three times each year. Remember that, without proper maintenance, even the best made steels will eventually oxidize and rust – so caring for your SOG knife well will ensure longevity and reliability throughout the years.

What are the recommended uses for my SOG folding knife?

Folding blade knives are designed to be portable utility tools, made primarily for cutting and puncturing. While the abilities of your knife may vary by design and size, there are some general activities that we do not recommend using your knife for. Do not throw, chop or pound with your SOG folding knife, as these activities may weaken or break your knife’s locking mechanism or damage your knife’s handle. Do not use your folding knife as a screwdriver or a pry bar, as you may not only damage the tip but you may break the blade.

How do I remove a pocket clip?

You may find that you need to remove the pocket clip from your knife for a myriad of reasons- the most common being in the event that it breaks, or to switch the pocket clip to the opposite side. Different knives require different tools to remove pocket clips. Below you'l find a handy chart to assist you. Note: The X-Ray Vision old clip was a side mounted clip, the new version is a top mounted bayonett style clip.
