Our story begins in Vietnam, where members of a highly classified US special ops unit - known as MACV-SOG - carried a unique combat knife into the jungle on covert missions. Years later, in 1986, that knife inspired a young designer, named Spencer Frazer, to found SOG Specialty Knives. His mission: to reproduce the original SOG Bowie knife and pay tribute to the special ops unit that created it. What began as a single commemorative model soon became a full line of innovative tools - field-proven by US Special Forces, even honored as the Navy SEAL knife of choice. Today, SOG knives are carried with confidence into the most demanding situations.
CRYOGENIC HEAT TREATMENT
Cryogenic Heat Treatment on select blades increases edge retention and steel hardness. This process slowly decreases the steel′s temperature to -300° Fahrenheit and then raises it back to room temperature. When the steel is put through this process, it relieves blade stresses at an atomic level resulting in increased toughness and wear-resistance.
Building upon SOG′s long tradition of working with and honoring Japanese knife makers, SOG partnered with Kiku Matsuda, one of the foremost tactical knife designers and blade grinders in Japan, to produce a line of knives. Together, Matsuda′s decades of experience in blade grinding and making fixed blade knives and SOG′s production experience has created one of the most unique, striking, and functional blades available. Through this collaboration, Matsuda and SOG have won awards and continue to drive innovative and functional knife designs.
